To the Editor:
On June 4, the Clark County PlanningCommission voted to allow more than 500 RV units, a clubhouse,a convenience store, gasoline pumps, and a car wash at the mouthof the Red Rock Canyon. The planning staff of Clark County andthe Red Rock Citizens Advisory Council had recommended that theproject be denied since it does not fit the land use plan or thezoning for the area. What is going on here?
In changing the land use and zoningfrom rural and light commercial, the developer will make a greatdeal of money. As an added "benefit," the developerindicated that the Bureau of Land Management has agreed to giveland to the project for a campground. Of course, there are nowater or sewer facilities in the area, so the rest of us willget to pay for infrastructure.
It's an interesting battle, andit's not over. On July 2, the Clark County Commission will meetfor a final decision on the matter. To save the canyon from assault, the commissioners need to hear fromus, and the message shouldbe clear: It's time to quit playing games with land-use agreements, with zoning, with local advisory groups, and with reality, Wedo not need or benefit from 500 RVs at the mouth of Red Rock Canyon.
